A brief description about Danson Sports FC & how it all started and what our direction is for the future of this fantastic community football club.
Danson Sports (Youth) FC was originally formed in the summer of 2005 by the current Club Secretary Steve Rayner to provide children from the local communities with an outlet where they could meet new friends and have fun at the same time while they learned the basics of the wonderful game. Since then the Club has gone from having ten 8 year old members to now having 260+ members from ages 4 - 18! With 20 teams, a Soccer School, 25 Volunteer Coaches/Managers and an outstanding board of committee members who give up their valuable spare time to commit to the future of the club and the children and families who are all part of it. The club has become a very family orientated whose sole aim is to provide football and enjoyment for children of all ages, abilities, race and gender in the local communities.
We provide expert & quality training for all children from age 4 through to 18, all children also have the opportunity to become part of a team, our teams range from U6 – U18. We believe in our club motto that Every Child Deserves A Chance! We have teams that cater for all abilities, on one end of the spectrum we have the Children that are top achievers at this sport playing in the highest leagues, we then have teams for the children that have the potential of achieving to the highest level these children play in the middle leagues and with great coaching and quality instruction they will at some point advance higher. We then have the players who have the drive and enthusiasm and use the football as a social and learning outlet because although they might not have the ability of the other children at the higher levels they still love playing football and really enjoy being with their friends regularly and learning from our fantastic coaches. All the children at our club don’t just come for the football they come to meet new friends within the community, they come to learn and they also come to keep active while enjoying themselves at the same time.
For our youngest members (age 4 & 5) we run a very popular Soccer School once a week, these players come along to learn the basics of football while having fun and meeting new friends at the same time.
Parents/Carers and players of our club have formed many new friendships during the 6 and a half years that we have been running and no doubt many more friendships will be formed for all the family for many years to come within our club. The emphasis on the community & social aspect of our club has and always will be at the driving force and the heart of our club.
All of our Managers, Coaches and Committee members are fully committed to the progress of the club which we more than prove by the voluntary hours we all put in every week in our spare time and by insuring that we not only give the best of our knowledge to the children but we also try to be positive role models as well. We are all qualified in what we do and this is with thanks to the clubs hard work and commitment in applying for funding and sponsorship that this is possible, however as you can imagine this is a very tough job to do especially with the current financial climate so we welcome any help that is offered. All of our Managers, Coaching staff and Committee members are fully CRB checked. Our Coaches and Managers hold a range of qualifications from FA Level 1 through to UEFA A License and have proven track records to show their success from turning average teams and players into potential stars.
The Future
Club Development
In May 2009 the club came up with a 5 year development plan and our sole aims within this plan are as follows:
Recruit and train new voluntary Coach’s & Managers through the FA
Since 2009 we have recruited 18 more voluntary coaches/managers and the club has funded the training for all of them from FA Level 1 to UEFA A Licence, all of our personnel have also attended FA workshops for safeguarding children and emergency aid, they have all also been through the CRB (Criminal records bureau) process, this has all been funded by the club. We can boast that we have 25 volunteers who are all completely qualified in their field as coaches, managers, assistant managers and committee members.
Recruit more local children of all abilities for all age groups U6 – U17
In 2009 we ran a massive campaign to recruit new players of all ages and abilities through local schools, flyers and newspaper ads. We spent the summer of 2009 holding open training sessions for all age groups from U6 – U15, we were spending every evening and all weekends at our local park holding these free open training sessions as we had such a big response from the campaign. By the beginning of the football season in September we had gained over 180 new players from just one campaign. The children and parents/carers were so impressed by the effort we were putting in that they knew that Danson Sports FC would be a great forward thinking club and they wanted to be part of it. We now had the beginning of a fantastic set up on a much bigger scale that we had been used to and we were relishing the challenge. By the beginning of the 2010 season we had over 220 members with more players coming all the time. We have now reached the milestone of having 20 teams, that is over 260 children who will be representing the club in the 2011/12 season and at least 1 team at every age group, some age groups have 2-3 teams and we are having to slow down on recruitment for the time being as our current facilities will not be able to cope with many more teams, but hopefully in the near future we can achieve our goal of owning our own facilities and we can then carry on building the club.
Recruit Girls for female only teams as per new FA rules
With new FA Rules in 2010 not letting girls play with boys from u11 upwards we found ourselves having to move with the times and so not to let some of the girls down who had played in mixed teams the season before for our club we decided to start a girls football team. Firstly we had to train one of our mums who had put her hand up to help out so we put her through the appropriate courses and started to recruit. We recruited some players but unfortunately not enough to put a team together for that season but we kept on training throughout the season and will now be entering a girl’s team at U14 in the 2011/12 season so our persistence paid off. With the club having girls teams this will also help towards our long term aim of gaining FA community charter standard.
Build relationships with local schools
Over the last 2 years we have built good relationships with some local schools including Brampton Primary School who we recently sponsored with new equipment for the school football teams as the school’s football equipment was very dated. We donated over £200 worth of equipment including balls, bibs, cones and ground markers. Over the last 2 years our clubs Head Coach and Chairman has regularly helped out with training sessions with the school football teams. Our Club Development Officer also has a great relationship with Oakwood Specialist Secondary School; this school caters for children who are experiencing emotional and behaviour difficulties and Our Club development Officer spends a lot of time at the school coaching football and other sports.
Gain FA Charter Standard status, with the main emphasis on becoming a community charter standard club by 2014
We are currently in the process of gaining the FA Charter Standard Award and have spent the last 2 years getting all of our personnel trained to the standards needed to gain the this Award. All the paperwork has been sent to the FA and they have confirmed we qualify for the Award so we are now just awaiting the confirmation and presentation of this. We are also well on track to gaining the highest Award of FA Community Charter Standard Club and this will no doubt be gained by 2014.
To be in a position to purchase some land locally and develop it to be a new home ground with training facilities, match day facilities, a club house and eventually a floodlight Astroturf.
Our current Home ground is located at Bexleyheath Sports Club and we hire these grounds on a weekly basis for both training and match days and share the ground with other sports such as cricket, tennis and hockey. During the winter months we have to pay for floodlit astro turf pitches or indoor training facilities within the local communities. The costs involved in hiring the pitches and training facilities are astronomical! We would be much better off buying or leasing some local land to use for training and match days throughout the year. The costs would be much lower and we could generate more income from the grounds, clubhouse and facilities. Unfortunately we are not currently in a financial position to do this, but we are working on it, so for now we will have to keep paying other facilities as we currently do not have much choice, but this remains a top priority for the club.
